Baradoy, Brenda

Brenda Baradoy and her husband Gary began their involvement in home education in 1986 when their first child was ready go to kindergarten. Not sure that that was the right place for their bright, active, curious, eldest son, they looked into the alternatives and reluctantly discovered home education was the best fit for the whole family. Brenda soon recognized the joys and advantages of home schooling, eventually teaching all three of their children at home. Brenda & Gary both served as support group leaders and special event co-coordinators for home educators. In 1993, having recognized the need in the growing home school community for a supplier of educational materials, and with the idea to be only a part time endeavour for a little extra income, they stocked a few bookcases in their dining room, sent out a one page list of materials, and C.H.E.R. (Canadian Home Education Resources) was born. Now nineteen years later, they are both full time (and a half) in the business with full and part time, wonderful employees, an amazing website, a store front, and a mailing list of thousands across the country. More importantly, they are now very proud grandparents of four.

BC CHEC Topics:

  • Curriculum Choices to Suit Your Family

With an ever-expanding choice of curriculum, how can a person possibly find the ‘right one?’  Brenda’s wealth of experience and reassuring message will calm your spirit, as she leads you through the choices and helps you narrow down what might and might not work for you.

Barney, Krista

Krista Barney lives in Vernon, BC with her two children Elizabeth and Benjamin (6 and 4 years old).  She has been helping homeschool families within HCOS since 2005 as an individualized teacher, a Learning Services Consultant, the IEP manager, and now, the School Based Team Co-ordinator among other hats.  This is her first year actually homeschooling, rather than just supporting others; and she is enjoying the flexibility and intimacy that doing Kindergarten at home allows.

BC CHEC Topics:

  • TS - IEP Writing for Teachers
Very few of us have ever been taught how to write an IEP in teacher training…I know I wasn't.  I mean isn't that the SE teacher's job!  Well, Distributed Learning has changed that type of thinking.  We are a team, and the SE teacher is no longer an island.  Therefore, you, the regular teacher, now need to know how to write an IEP as you will most likely be the one typing up the document.  BUT, have no fear, it is not as scary as you think.  If you can fill out a form, then you can write an IEP.  Not sure if your students need an IEP?  We'll be covering that question too.  This workshop is a "must have" for HCOS teachers as our numbers are moving towards 1 in 3 students will need either an adapted, modified, or service only IEP.  Differences between the types of IEPs?  Also to be discussed in the workshop.  Come on out and have your eyes opened to the freedom of individualized programming.

They have four grown children who are all strong in their faith and pursuing God’s plan for their lives.

BC CHEC Topics:

  • Internet Safety - the New Wild WestThe internet is the vast new frontier that is full of promise for all things digital. But like the wild-west it is also full of renegades, criminals and the lawless. Add to this that our children are far more apt to explore this frontier without the careful guidance of loving parents. Also we are engaging and encouraging your children to enter into this frontier for their education. In this session Greg Bitgood will give you guidance and suggestions that will help you disciple and raise your children in this wild new frontier.

Effa, Karen

Karen was introduced to homeschooling by a friend when her first child was still a pre-schooler.  The sampling of kindergarten curriculum she discovered to support constructive play launched her on an annual search for the best educational materials.  Now after fifteen years of homeschooling, she still enthusiastically home schools her youngest child and enjoys opportunities to encourage and support other homeschooling parents. Last year, Karen registered as a part-time student to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Education.  She is thoroughly enjoying being a student again and looks forward to the new doors the Lord will open in the future.

BC CHEC Topics:

  • Teaching Your Child to Recognize the Counterfeits Once your children have a solid Biblical worldview, some familiarity with opposing perspectives will be essential. Our post-Christian culture is awash with ideas flowing from Secular Humanism, Marxism, Transcendentalism, Post Modernism, and Islamic ideologies. Ideas have consequences and our children need to be able to discern truth from error. This presentation of ”Countering Culture: Arming Yourself to Confront Non-Biblical Worldview” will introduce you to tools for preparing your children.

Filion-Sherwood, Marie

Growing up with her first language as French, Marie wanted to pass on her mother tongue to her children. As a homeschooler since 1996, she searched for a curriculum that was phonetic, had rich culture and was written from a Christian Worldview. She found none, so she wrote one. After using this program in a co-op setting Marie decided to assemble the materials and Le Français Facile was born. Great Commission Languages soon followed with the introduction of a Spanish program and more recently the release of Introductory Hebrew. Marie decided to jump on the bandwagon of learning and earned her Masters of Science in Psychology while homeschooling the remaining three children at home. Marie now works part time to help severely emotionally disturbed children and their families find hope and healing. Her Curly Horses assist in accomplishing this ministry and GCL funds part of the operating costs. When people purchase her curriculum they are also helping these hurting families heal.

BC CHEC Topics:

  • The Real Truth about SocializationWe hear it all the time, “What about socialization?” Find out the real truth about what socialization really is and how schools actually discourage real socialization. This workshop will help the homeschoolers to feel good about what they are really providing their children.
  • Creating an Immersion EnvironmentLearning a foreign language can be accomplished more quickly when an immersion environment is set up. Marie will share some simple, yet effective ways to continue making a foreign language fun, easy, and productive.
  • The Great Commission and Your FamilyWe homeschool for a number of reasons, but training our children to go into all the world making disciples might be one of the most important. Marie will share how you can integrate activities into your homeschool that look beyond your family to help others.

Goheen, Michael

Michael Goheen (Ph.D. Utrecht University) is the Geneva Professor of Worldview and Religious Studies at Trinity Western University, Langley, B.C. and Teaching Fellow in Mission Studies at Regent College, Vancouver. He is (co)author or (co)editor of six books on biblical theology, worldview, and mission. He was involved in home-educating his four children and hopes to be involved also with his grandchildren.

BC CHEC Topics:

  • Home Education and the Western Story

Keynote #1:  In this keynote we will trace the development of the humanist worldview in Western history, and note the way it has shaped education. We will observe the idolatry that shapes all of culture including the educational enterprise.

  • Home Education and the Biblical Story

Keynote #2:  In this keynote we will trace the Biblical story centred in Jesus Christ, and ask what it means to view education within this overarching story.

  • Faithful Home Education at the Crossroads

Keynote #3: How should home-educators live at the crossroads between the biblical and Western humanist stories? We are necessarily shaped by our cultural story and yet are called as Christians to not be conformed to the idolatry of that story. How can we be faithful to the gospel in our educational endeavours?

  • Michael Answers Your QuestionsAfter spending the day under Michael’s tutelage, as he laid a foundation for Faithful Home Education, you may have questions, or want to probe some ideas even further.  Michael has set aside an hour to spend answering questions and engaging in discussion with you.
  • History through the Lens of the Gospel

How we study and teach history when we view it through the lens of the gospel.

Goheen, Marnie

Marnie Goheen has home-educated her four children from kindergarten through the end of high school. All went on to university and two have continued on to graduate degrees up to the Ph.D. level. During that time she started several home-education parental co-op groups as well as an orchestra and choir. She has spoken on home-education issues in Canada, Australia, and England. She has been married to Mike for 33 years, and together they have four married children, and four grandchildren. She looks forward to participating in the home-education of her growing brood of grandchildren.

BC CHEC Topics:

  • Canadian Idols

In this workshop we will consider various idols that shape our culture and the younger generation—idols such as consumerism, narcissism, entitlement, pseudo-tolerance, image.

  • Closing Reflections

The benediction for the BC CHEC weekend rests in Marnie’s hands.  Who could possibly be in a better position to offer this blessing, than someone who has not only survived to tell about her experience, but has successfully passed on the baton to the next generation?  Come and be encouraged and inspired to carry on the call to faithfully home educate in your own home!

Hahn, Marilyn

Marilyn Hahn has been teaching since 1993, seven of those years in schools and the rest with home school families in Alberta.  She has been a family facilitator, workshop teacher for hundreds of kids and parents, a tutor, conference speaker, curriculum creator, and writer.  She has presented for many home school conferences, which have taken her as far as Montreal, Quebec, and as close as Princeton, BC.  Alberta home school families in Edmonton, Grand Prairie, Red Deer, Lacombe, Calgary, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, and Slave Lake have enjoyed her humorous and down-to-earth approaches to homeschooling.  Her particular passion is to support boys and their teachers/parents in the learning process, and she especially enjoys reading a great piece of writing that involves spit balls, a close encounter with hooligans, and a well-told knock-knock joke that invovles skunks.  She offers solid advice, real solutions (she home schooled her two sons in junior high), hope, laughter, insight, and hands-on help that will leave you encouraged and confident that you can do it.

BC CHEC Topics:

  • Understanding Restlessness, Reluctance and Resistance

Join us for a hands-on and hearty discussion on what might be going on when they sit there, arms folded, lip out, feet flat on or flying off the floor, erasers fling and tears falling, and you KNOW nothun's going to be learned that day.  Often, hidden dynamics play the hugest role in how people learn with each other, how they communicate, how they face their fears, how they process new things, and more.  Teaching is NOT as simple as choosing the best workbook or school board.  It is NOT as simple as providing healthy food and lots of stickers.  Discover how you CAN make it simpler just by understanding how personality differences and similarities impact teaching and learning, and how we can respect each other - parent and child - when it comes to just that.  This course can also be invaluable in helping you interact with others outside your teaching/learning world.

  • Tips and Tricks to Teaching Creative Writing"Oh!" I hear you lament.  "I am SO not creative!!!!"   Puh-shaw!  Join us for a hilarious and insightful workshop on learning what is creativity, how you can become - and why you should be - more creative, and how you can identify, encourage, and praise creativity in your child.  After all, is it creativity that lights up a child's eyes and shows the way to their future life's work or calling.  This is a playful and hands-on workshop, so come with a smile and something oval-shaped.  :)
  • How to Teach Boys with Success & Dignity

Anything you take in this workshop can be applied to your marriage as well! So you get a double-whammy!  Ladies, moms, your boys and menfolk need you to know why they spit, hog the remote, wiggle and jiggle about, clam up, forget the first three things on any given list, think sports are God's gift to the universe as we know it, and why they think you can't drive - well.  Why?  Why!  Why do they act like this?! you bemoan.  It's quite simple, once we go back to Health class!  So bring a sharp pencil, a giggle, your anecdotes, your "I wonder why's," AND your husband or older sons (to back me up!), and let's talk about how you can better teach and interact with your sons (and menfolk) so that you get the results you need, the connection you crave, and the dignity they deserve.

BC CHEC Topics:

  • Using Everyday Activities to Meet L. O.
This session will look at some of the things that families do on a regular basis that fulfill Ministry Learning Outcomes.
Becoming familiar with your child's learning outcomes, and thinking outside the box, will help you and your support teacher to discover ways that you are naturally meeting the plo's.

Holden, Gord

I began my career in education working as an aid in Special Education. This led me into teaching. When I graduated from SFU, I took my young family to the Comox Valley, where I had been a pastor with The Salvation Army. There, I worked in a Middle School (13 years), Elementary School (3 years), and a Distance Education School (4 years). I was recently hired by Heritage Christian Online School to bring a specialized expertise I’ve developed into their options for personalized learning. What I bring is experience in using and developing immersive environments and technology for learning. Students using my materials will not just read about the Roman Coliseums, they will build it, and/or walk through it, listen to the characters that inhabit it. They will not simply read about the Pueblo Indian dwellings in Colorado, but go back in time and live with them, learning about their relationship with the land first hand. In other words, the student experience what they are learning about, much like what happened in the movie “Avatar.”

BC CHEC Topics:

  • TS - Quest Atlantis and Atlantis Remixed: (Workshop runs from 11:30 - 12:30) Quest Atlantis (soon to become Atlantis Remixed) is the premiere resource for parents wanting their grade 4-7 students to be engaged in a secure, exciting, and challenging virtual environment. Through research quests that are based on 7 social commitments, the students gain the skills and knowledge they need to become a powerful influence in saving the world of Atlantis. This world, plagued by problems that are similar to our own, needs the help of the questers, who learn that they can make a difference.

Kane, Linda

Linda Kane M.CND, Sound Therapy Specialist, Behavioral Consultant, and International Lecturer, entered the field of special needs in 1977 with the birth of her oldest son, who was diagnosed with Down syndrome. Scott was born at a time when the standard recommendation was to institutionalize children born with DS.  Refusing to even consider such a thing, Linda and her husband, Lee, ventured out on their own looking for answers that would help their son. Sadly, most of their early education was finding what did not work. They were fast becoming veterans of numerous unsuccessful programs and therapies.  Through this search for answers, Linda found The Neurodevelopmental Approach in 1989.

Realizing the life-changing effects of this approach, Linda entered into an eight year apprenticeship in the neurodevelopmental field. She expanded into specialized fields through extensive training in Auditory Integration Training, Auditory Enhancement Training, Behavioral Management, Samonas Sound Therapy, Feeding Therapy, Oral Motor Therapy, Primitive and Postural Reflexes, and TKM® (The King Institute Method).

Lee and Linda founded Hope And A Future, Inc. in September, 1999. Hope And A Future’s primary mission is to give hope and specific help to families involved with learning challenges, developmental needs, genetic syndromes, brain injuries, Autism, and visual/hearing impairments.

Linda firmly believes the potential of an individual is determined by the opportunities presented to them. Nothing in all creation can compare to the amazing capacity and adaptability of the human brain. Traditional thinking has believed there are limits to the brains capacity. Research into neural plasticity of the brain (the brain’s ability to change and adapt) is greatly changing how we work with brain injuries, learning inefficiencies, sensory problems, and genetic syndromes. This is how we can help all children, or ourselves, reach our fullest potential.

Hope And A Future guides families by giving them the expertise for working with the specific, individual needs of their precious family member/members.

Linda is certified through the International Christian Association of Neurodevelopmentalists, Inc. (ICAN). Currently, in affiliation with ICAN, the opportunity for continued research, study, and the exploration of options and methodologies to enhance the field of neurodevelopment is an ongoing critical part of her work. Linda travels extensively throughout the United States and British Columbia Canada serving individual families, lecturing, and teaching individuals, educators, and professionals within the fields of education and special needs.

BC CHEC Topics:

  • LS1 - The Neurodevelopmental Approach

The Neurodevelopmental Approach is like no other approach to human development. It is unique in its approach of looking at the whole individual, not the separate pieces. Taking the individual pieces and understanding how they interrelate will greatly enhance what you do as you work with your child. The potential of any individual is based upon the opportunities presented them. If appropriate, specific opportunities are presented, there will be greater outcomes. If opportunities are not offered, often due to the limitations set forth by the self fulfilling prophecy of a “label”, less will be achieved. Down syndrome, Autism, Learning Disabilities are labels and you have to reach beyond the expectations of that label.

  • LS3 - When There Are Challenges

You can “teach to your child’s learning style”. You can teach to their “right brain or left brain”. You can teach all your children through a specific curriculum or a unit style approach. You can be very eclectic in your teaching choices. You can teach all together or give each child their own teaching time. But what do you do when despite all you have done, there are still challenges? What do you do when NOTHING seems to work or make a difference? We can give you answers to why this is occurring and help with the correct direction to go.

  • Creating a Positive Learning EnvironmentAre you worn out before noon, feeling defeated, or dreading another day? Do not despair – there is hope ! At this workshop we will discuss the most effective ways to create a positive learning environment – including practical tips for implementing and application. Whether you are working with a strong-willed child or a passive resistor, there are techniques that can help you turn the situation around.

Madiera, Susan

Susan has a Bachelors degree in Engineering Mathematics from the University of Arizona and Masters in Education with an emphasis in Educational Technology from San Diego State University. Prior to becoming a mom, Susan worked in the aerospace and software industries where she developed various systems and tools. Susan is currently the president of her local homeschool co-op and enjoys supporting and promoting homeschooling through various groups and events. Susan, her husband and son, live on a self-proclaimed swamp where they raise chickens, watch wildlife, and love schooling at home.

BC CHEC Topics:

  • Math: Build a Solid Foundation

The foundation of mathematics is patterns and relationships. Build on your children’s natural ability to visualize. Enhance their learning by using guided discovery. Help them master the facts and solve problems while understanding concepts and the relationships. All these are essential for building a strong foundation.

McLeod, April

April McLeod is in her 2nd year as a HCOS support teacher.  Last year, one of April’s students was screened for Irlen Syndrome and was given coloured overlays to help with their reading.  This student’s whole life was transformed.  She could see the words on the written page properly and she could read like never before.  After observing this amazing change, April heard of the training being offered in Kelowna and decided to take the course.  While at the training, it was revealed through the screening process that April had Irlen Syndrome herself.  With overlays and tinted lenses now, what was a constant source of frustration with the printed word and many other things, life has changed significantly for the better.  Come and discover if you and/or those around you could be helped with a very simple solution.

BC CHEC Topics:

  • TS-Irlen SyndromeIrlen – A piece of the puzzle for reading problems, learning difficulties, ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, headaches, and other physical symptoms through the use of colour. Irlen Syndrome – What is it?  Never heard of it??  Is it affecting my students or my own children? Irlen Syndrome, also known as Scotopic Sensitivity, is present in 50% of learning difficulties, 65% of Dyslexia, 33% of ADD/HD, large % of headaches and migraines, and 80% of autism.  It is easy to treat with Irlen overlays and lenses. This workshop will explain what it is, how it affects the life of someone who has Irlen, and will help you to recognize it in those around you.  Irlen is an easily treatable condition and can provide great relief to anyone who has been suffering silently and not knowing why.  The presenter, April McLeod is a certified Irlen screener and has Irlen Syndrome herself.  Come and learn how this visual perception difficulty can affect a whole life!!

Munro, Christine

Christine Munro is a mom to four great kids whom she has been home educating for the past 10 years; two are graduating this year. When not expanding her own children's learning opportunities, Christine has her hand in many other educational endeavours. Having taught in public and private institutions as well as homeschooling and teaching with Kleos Open Learning, Christine has seen all sides of the educational world and nothing has inspired her more than seeing children's fascination in God's creation. Her love of science has lead her to many Provincial and National Science Events to discover ways to engage and motivate children and families in science education. Her passion for learning is contagious and she hopes she can send home families with a renewed interested in engaging their children to further explore the world around them.

BC CHEC Topics:

  • Celebrating Family in Science

Questioning comes natural to children. I wonder why the sky is blue? I notice magnets only stick to certain things.  Questions are pivotal to inquiry-based science education and it is usually these questions that drive investigation.  Come learn about some easy investigations that encourage observation and create a curious mindset for all members of the family. Children start to discover details about everyday phenomena and begin to formulate questions that can later build the basis for further scientific investigations where the family can foster a sense of inquiry, observation, and curiosity.

Pape, Rita

Early in her career as an educator, Rita became especially interested in finding effective methods to support student literacy. Her passion led her into the area of Special Education and she worked for several years as a resource teacher with the Catholic School Board in the Archdiocese of Winnipeg, Manitoba. In the summer of 2009, Rita met Susan Barton, an internationally recognized expert on the subject of dyslexia. She became certified under Ms. Barton as a dyslexia diagnostician. Currently, Rita has a successful private practice, testing and tutoring students of all ages who struggle with this learning difference. In addition, Rita works as an educational consultant, offering support and information to parents, educators and administrators who are interested in learning more about dyslexia.

BC CHEC Topics:

  • LS2 - Introduction to the Susan Barton Program

The Barton Reading & Spelling System teachespeople from all walks of life exactly how to tutor people with dyslexia. Parents of dyslexic children can learn to become tutors, as can professionals like Reading and Resource Specialists, Speech-Language Therapists, Educational Therapists, and Private Tutors. The Barton Reading and Spelling System is based on the Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Method.
The Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Method was developed in the early 1930's by Anna Gillingham and a group of master teachers. Dr. Samuel Orton assigned Anna's group the task of designing a whole new way of teaching the phonemic structure of our written language to people with dyslexia.  The goal was to create a sequential system that builds on itself in an almost 3-dimensional way. It must show how sounds and letters are related and how they act in words; it must also show how to attack a word and break it into smaller pieces. And it must be a multisensory approach, as dyslexic people learn best by involving all of their senses: visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic. The Orton-Gillingham MultisensoryMethod is different from other reading methods in two ways: what is taught, and how
    it is taught.

  • LS4 - Implementing the Susan Barton System

Parents want to be trained as quickly as possible. That’s why the Barton System is split into ten levels.
That means you don’t have to learn the entire system before you start. You only need to learn one level at a time. Each level is shipped in a separate, easy-to store box. Each level contains everything you need to be successful: Training on DVD, Manual with Complete Lesson Plans, Color-coded Letter Tiles, all other Manipulatives. Each level contains from 10 to 15 lessons. If a student is being tutored twice a week, it will take from 3 to 5 months to complete a level. Learn why most students, no matter how old they are, must start with Level 1.

Rainbow, Janet

Janet Rainbow has worked supporting homeschoolers for over 20 years.  She oversees the “Equivalency Certificate” option for registered homeschoolers.  This option is for parents who want some accountability and validation for their program but do not want to follow the BC learning outcomes.  She also works closely with Sue Savard in helping support flexible choices for any student in the grad program.

Savard, Sue

Sue Savard is an experienced Guidance Counsellor who works  closely  with  enrolled Grad Program students  and their parents to create a program that meets a student’s specific goals, whether it be a Dogwood Diploma or a School Completion Certificate in BC.  She also teaches Planning 10 and Grad Transitions, further enabling her to connect effectively with students as they enter and exit the Grad Program.

BC CHEC Topics:

  • Highschool Options

There is more than one way to approach high school.  Sue and Janet will explore the options that are open to homeschoolers in British Columbia.

Stewart, Teresa

Teresa has been homeschooling her 5 children, four of whom have a variety of learning challenges, for ten years.  With a background in Recreational Therapy; Wilderness Instructor (with emphasis on Remedial Education), and time spent developing and implementing Christian wilderness and educational programs for youth and children internationally, the Lord provided an eclectic training for thinking outside of the box for those whose learning style and passions require a more individualized approach. An engaging public speaker, her roles as a community, medical and family advocate have led to many opportunities of sharing how God’s faithfulness and ingenuity changes lives.

As a member of the Executive for the vibrant Abbotsford Christian Homeschool Association, Teresa found that even healthy, regular support groups weren’t reaching the needs of the large population of special education families. This has led to the recent development of a Christian Special Education Homeschool support group, which has a growing and grateful membership.  With emphasis on creating a safe, non-judgemental environment for families to network, share mutual concerns with others “living the challenge”, and build resources pertinent specifically for the homeschooling family, the interest in the group continues to grow and develop both locally and provincially.

Married now for 20 years, Teresa lives with her ever supportive and understanding husband and their children in Abbotsford, B.C.

Parents often go through a whole emotional process when they realize that their child may have various learning or life challenges. Often this means a change in the dreams and future they had envisioned for that child. This may not only affect the dynamics between the parents, but also between members of the entire family. Network and develop ideas together on resources to strengthen us on the journey as we continue on this special homeschooling challenge.

Strom, Ray

Raymond Strom was born, a farmer’s son, in 1950 in southern Alberta.  At an early age (5) he became aware that farming was not for him, and that science was going to be his life calling.  Ray’s career has taken him from Chemistry to Geology.
In 1988, Ray and Lois began home educating their two children, and at the same time became part of the growing Alberta Home Education Association (AHEA).  Ray became involved at a formal level around 1990. Ray served as President for several years with AHEA and spent many hours tactically planning on how to best deal with government and public school boards.  Ray has been actively involved in origins research since 1980, and currently is involved in numerous projects evaluating origin, deposition and diagenesis of rocks as they relate to the biblical Genesis record.  Ray and his wife attend Rocky Mountain Calvary Chapel in Calgary and is father of 2 girls and grandfather to 6.

Timmermans, Carmen

I'm excited to be working for HCOS as an individual teacher for friends and family here on Vancouver Island, as an advocate and consultant for gifted students and as the Assistant Director of Learning Services.  My background as an educator started in Ontario with an Masters of Science in Secondary Education from Niagara University, although my first teaching job was in BC as a Montessori kindergarten directress (s-t-r-e-t-c-h).   In my twenties I travelled to a number of international  schools - in the Middle East, Africa, the Caribbean - teaching Pre-K  to grade 12.   I eventually came back to BC to complete a Masters in Leadership from Trinity Western.  I teach a kids art class each week, love out-of-the box thinking, the question "Why not?" and feel in good company here.   I believe ...in many things, but the top two that come to mind right now are that balance is vital and that God is good - all the time.

  • Determining Special Needs

Without a class full of same-age children to compare to, homeschool parents sometimes aren’t sure what is just a normal part of development, and what deserves some special attention.  What are some of the red flags you should be aware of?  How can you know if that nagging feeling that ‘something isn’t quite right’ is a real problem, or if it’s just your own insecurities peeking through?  Carmen will help guide you into determining whether you should consider learning supports for your child.

  • LS7-Supporting Parents of Gifted StudentsThis is a open discussion group (not a presentation) for parents of gifted students who are looking both to support and be supported in their unique journey.  Facilitated by Carmen Timmermans (HCOS Advocate for Gifted students) and Lynda Hearn (homeschooling parent of gifted students), this time is set aside to discuss our success and challenges, to share resources and ideas and to explore how we can best be a support to each other.

  • LS6 - Introduction to the Fast ForWord Program

Scientific Learning introduces Fast ForWord® technology helps accelerate learning by boosting the brain’s ability to process incoming information more effectively and efficiently. Just as exercise of the body promotes physical fitness, so does the proper exercise of the mind promote brain fitness. The latest neuroscience confirms that the brain can reinvent and reconfigure itself throughout life and not just during the formative years. Exercising our brain improves brain fitness in four critical areas: Memory, Attention, Processing and Sequencing. Together, brain fitness activities and good instructional practices create an optimal learning environment where students can reach their full potential. Four key components of Fast Forword’s technology-based intervention create the dramatic changes in brain function required to achieve universal literacy: Frequency and Intensity, Adaptivity, Simultaneous Development and Timely Motivation. The Fast ForWord® LANGUAGE series includes a patented technology that stretches and emphasizesspeech sounds at early exercise levels, progressing to natural speech sounds as a student advances to higher levels. The FastForWord program is recognized as a proven scientifically based reading intervention product at leading educational organizations.

Wiebe, Shandra

I began my homeschooling journey years ago when our daughter begged to be removed from school in grade 7. She was struggling with dyslexia and a rowdy class so another option had to be found. While on this journey we tried many different curricula and methods including distance education and integrated programs; eventually we found what worked for her. During this time I became very committed to homeschooling our young sons. The joy of learning alongside my children has been an incredible privilege. We enrolled with HCOS in its first year of operation. In 2007, I started working part-time as the HCOS Librarian. Today, the school has grown considerably and so has the library! We are now part of the Heritage Christian Schools Learning Commons - an integrated library for both the campus and online schools. The library's purpose is to meet the needs of both homeschooling and campus families by offering quality resources from a Christian perspective. I love to share the joy of homeschooling with other families and I really love books, so working in the library is a special privilege. I enjoy serving the moms and dads who e-mail, call or drop in looking for information and helping them find the books and kits that will inspire them and their children. Be sure to "drop-in" and browse in person or browse the library catalog on-line!
